Falken Azenis RT-615k Review

First of all, I would like to introduce a new contributor. My dear friend Chris Cullen. Chris showed up at Southern California's autocross scenery a few years back and surprised everybody by how fast he was at his first try. He was the champion in SK2 (street tire stock class) in 2007. He has also competed with the LAKC club in the TAG karts. If I remember correctly, Chris was in top three in the competitive TAG field at his first race. He has won many of the races there and consistently places top.

Chris has very good car control as well, and is very comfortable being on the edge of traction. Because of his heightened sense of driving feel, he is especially suited to do driving impression reviews. Please welcome Chris Cullen. Here is his first entry!

Chris: So, on May 2nd, 2010, I drove at Streets of Willow Springs in Rosamond, CA. The weather was warm, about 83 degrees ferenheit, with low humidity and somewhat strong winds. I don't think the winds played too much a part in having an advantageous tailwind going down the straighaways. I acheived a 1.36:684 lap time on the CW configuration. The car is a 1992 Mazda Miata with light modifications consisting of Bilstein HD shocks, a larger front sway bar, and a spec miata exhaust. I also run a roll bar.
The tires were: Falken Azenis RT-615K, 195/60/14

The tires have good turn-in qualities, and in transitions too. They started to get greasy after about 6 hard laps on them, but that could have been a result of my overdriving. They seemed to have pretty good braking abilities, and I only locked-up the tires a couple of times the whole day. Overall lateral grip is better then the existing RT-615s. The lap was about 2.2 seconds faster than my last visit to the track. I can't say the improvement because of the tires alone. The track was made faster, the weather was 30 degrees cooler, and I now have the Bilsteins installed too. I used to have leaking stock shocks. I estimate that about one second was a result of the tires.

Jerry's notes: The new Azenis RT-615k looks exactly the same as the old RT-615, and I read that it has the same construction. The only difference is the compound. That is what I read.
